Retails: $6.99 (Total Wine)
This 2007 Italian red (no shit, right?) is incredibly smooth. Smoother than a Chianti and without the tartness of a Sangiovese, Montepulciano D'Abruzzo delivers a tasty varietal that is extremely drinkable. Let the wine breathe slightly before sipping. I found that this one only gets better with time---like a true wine should. From the time you allow the first delectable sip through your lips, your palette is instantly hit with a rush of flavor--it will tingle the front taste buds with a sweetness that will turn to dryness moments later. But it's a slight dryness that allows the fullness of the flavor to linger in your mouth. I consumed my (first) glass with a pasta carbonara which was a fantastic pairing. The smoke-y flavor of the bacon was heightened by the flavorful, somewhat dry experience of this wine. Delicious!
Final Words: Smooth and delightful, never overpowering, perfect when paired with a flavorful dish.
